Forming powerful MBA teams using Lego architecture

Abstract

This cost effective, experiential team building exercise provides a two to three-hour long problem-based learning intervention that uses Lego Architecture building block kits as a proxy for work. Designed as part of a wider induction programme, students are encouraged to reflect on the role(s) they play in team working using the Belbin and Tuckman frameworks. This codified instructional experiential exercise explains the inspiration, ideation, adaption and implementation processes used to enable university faculty to design and deliver an impactful and highly memorable classroom based, interactive learning experience. Additionally, the paper offers instructor advice on students’ likely responses and post-engagement reflections. This experiential exercise was designed for MBA business master’s degree students, but could easily be adapted for use across other disciplines and learning levels.
